The term "civilization" started being commonly used in the late 17th century in both England, and France. It is derived from the word "civis" (citizen) which created the word "civilis" (polite, or having proper manners and being refined).
Through the 19th century, following the footsteps of Montesquieu, Lewis Henry Morgan proposed a theory with 3 stages of evolution which are, savagery, barbarism, and civilization (most advanced stage a society could achieve).
