Walpurgisnatch
In other terms: Black Sabbath => Belief about witches meeting in the woods with the devil for a night of bloody festivities.

1/ ANGELA CARTER, "THE WEREWOLF", IN THE BLOODY CHAMBER (1978)

Angela Carter (Olive Stalker) 8 May 1940, Sussex, England. Raised by a feminist storytelling grandmother. In The Blood Chamber she gives a politically incorrect twist to traditional tales with a feminist point of view.

  • She uses the lexical field of "cold" to settle an anguishing mood
  • Some strong references to the witches of Salem and to many superstitions and creatures such as warewolves, second sight, vampires and such
  • She overcomes sexism and ageism in a clever way by offering her own, fierce version of the two weak characters in the original story.
  • Plot twist: The werewolf is the grandmother, and red-hood finds it out as chopes the wolf's paw and sees her grandmother handless. Red Hood ends up killing her grandmother and still gets her happy ending by living prosper in grand mothers house.

2/ JAMES FINN GARNER, "LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD", POLITICLLY CORRECT BEDTIME STORIES (1994)

James Finn Garner shows us the ridiculous apect of PC movement applied to the simplicity of a bedtime story. His collection of Politically Correct bedtime Stories is a sardonic approach to hypocritical politeness.

  • References to psychology bullshit with Freud's associating of a little girl's fear of the wolf to her fear of her own sexuality.
  • An overuse of politically correct sentences that make the story heavy and paternalising on purpose
  • Plot twist: An exagerated feminism to an absurd degree: as the girl is about to be attacked by an offended wolf, they both turn against the guy who tries to save her because she find it offensive to be saved.

A retenir :

To modify a well known story can be a way of embellishment. You can play with a fairy tale or any other story and just write it your own way.
Make sure the plot changes unexpectedly while some of the most marking and important elements of the original story remain, so that anyone can recognize the original story and see which direction you take it to, and why.
