DNL- Early colonisation of N.A

1492 : Christopher Columbus -> early colonisation of central and south america

1587 : First british colony in North America -> Roanoake

1687 : Jamestown settlement

Geographical markers in this map shows the wildly diverse terrain and features of North American continent

⭢ first surviving colony was in Northeast ⭢ Jamestown

  • weather, desert, swamps, moutains, Native Americans tribes CONSIDERABLY slowed the process towards the West

1) The lost colony of Roanoke

A retenir :

  • a stay : une requisition
  • the brinke of war : aux portes de la guerre
  • to be dismartled : être démonté
  • dead-ends : impasses
  • hoax : un subterfuge
  • the bulk of the information : la majorité des info
  • to decipher : déchiffrer
  • carving : gravure
  • to dwindle down : être réduit à

The first expedition was led by explorer called JOHN WHITE in 1587 after failed attempt in 1585

⭢ travelled with 115 men, women and children to modern-day North Carolina on the island of Roanoake

⭢ they quickly realized they would not have enough provisions to last through winter

The governor is help up in England bc they are on the verge of war : Spanish Armada attacking shores

consequence : White’s ship is mobilised for war effort and ends up staying 3 full years

Theories as to what happened to them :

  1. were attacked by Northen American tribes (i.e the Powhatan)
  2. tried to flee to the South to find food
  3. attempt to sail back to England

We know so little bc there was NOTHING left (ie clothes, houses, papers, weapons, boxes or bodies)

John White wrote a travel diary, except he wasnt there so we have no written account of the following events

November 1937 : Dare stone is found in Georgia ⭢ written by Eleanor Dare and she says that they moved and lost more than 100 people since he left

⭢ confirms theory #2

Other stones were found but none of those were authenticated ⭢ they were a hoax

consequence : people are still searching for the last colony ⭢ using mapping/scanning of the land, of the sea and even DNA
